Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you might want to know before getting in touch — no question is too small.
Getting started
- How do I know if therapy is right for me?
- If you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or struggling to cope with something in your life, therapy can help. You don't need to be in crisis to benefit — many people come to therapy simply wanting to understand themselves better or work through a specific challenge. A free initial consultation is a good way to explore whether it feels right.
- What happens in the first session?
- The first session is a chance for us to meet and for you to share what's brought you to therapy. There's no pressure to disclose everything straight away — we go at your pace. I'll ask some questions to understand your situation, explain how I work, and we'll discuss what you're hoping to get from our sessions together.
- Do I need a GP referral?
- No — you can contact me directly without a referral. Private therapy is self-referred, which means you can get started as soon as you feel ready.
- How long does therapy last?
- This varies from person to person. Some people find short-term work of 6–12 sessions helpful for a specific issue. Others prefer longer-term therapy to explore deeper patterns. We'll review progress regularly and you're always free to end or pause at any point.
Sessions & practicalities
- Are sessions online or in person?
- Sessions are currently offered online via a secure video platform. Online therapy is just as effective as in-person work for most people, and many clients find it more convenient and accessible.
- How long is each session?
- Each session is 50 minutes. This is the standard therapeutic hour, giving us a consistent, boundaried space to work in.
- How often will we meet?
- Most clients meet weekly, especially at the start of therapy. This regularity helps build momentum and trust. As things progress, some people move to fortnightly sessions. We'll find a rhythm that works for you.
- What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
- I ask for at least 48 hours' notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Sessions cancelled with less notice may be charged at the full rate. Life happens — I try to be flexible where I can.
Fees & funding
- How much do sessions cost?
- Sessions are £65 per 50-minute session. I offer a small number of reduced-fee places for those on lower incomes — please mention this when you get in touch and we can discuss what's possible.
- Do you work with insurance?
- I don't currently work directly with insurance providers, but some clients are able to claim back costs through their health insurance policy. It's worth checking with your provider.
- Is there a free initial consultation?
- Yes — I offer a free 15–20 minute phone or video consultation. This is a chance to ask questions, get a feel for how I work, and decide whether you'd like to go ahead. There's no obligation.
Confidentiality & safety
- Is everything I say confidential?
- Yes, with very limited exceptions. Everything discussed in sessions is confidential. The exceptions are if I believe you or someone else is at serious risk of harm, or if I'm required to disclose information by law. I'll always discuss any concerns with you first where possible.
- Are you registered with a professional body?
- Yes — I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), registration number 395579. This means I work to a strict ethical framework and am committed to ongoing professional development and supervision.
- What if I'm in crisis right now?
- If you're in immediate danger, please call 999 or go to your nearest A&E. For emotional support, the Samaritans are available 24/7 on 116 123 (free). You can also text SHOUT to 85258 for free, confidential text support, or call NHS 111 for urgent medical advice.
